Metal Shed Roof Condensation

There are steps to take to ensure as little condensation occurs as possible.

Why metal shed and garage roofs get condensation it took me a while to work this out but if you think of the way a solar still works that is what is happening to your shed roof. I have done alot of research on this and making it a cold roof seems the answer so i am planning on sticking 50mm polystyrene boards up leaving a 50mm air gap with a membrane below the insulation. A metal shed is great for storing items or can be used as a workshop. I have a major condensation problem with my garage roof due to it being made with box profile steel sheeting.

Try and avoid putting your metal shed too close to trees and shrubs as this will minimise condensation inside your shed. That excess moisture ends up as drops of condensation on the roof. Why does condensation happen particularly with metal sheds. If this happens you need to trim your hedges and other foliage.

Overnight trees and shrubs give off moisture which will enter your metal shed through the ventilation holes and appear to be condensation. Metal tools go rusty fabric becomes mildewed there must be a way to solve this problem. It requires very little maintenance and unlike wooden sheds it is not necessary to stain or treat the outside. The prime reason for this is due to the temperature differential between the inside and the outside of the shed.

The spray foam will fill every cavity and gap on your metal shed walls ceiling and under your floor. Picture a cloud of moisture floating overhead between the rafters. Once sealed moist air will not be able to contact shed surfaces allowing it to escape instead of condensing on walls and ceilings. Warm wet air rises and meets the cold roof and cools.

Replacing the roof with epdm etc is not an option so looking for a remedy. Metal roof sweating is a result of excess humidity condensing on the underside of your roof. Condensation in metal sheds is a commonly reported problem the inside of the shed roof is running with water and this damp atmosphere is bad for the items that are stored there. As it cools it can t hold as much moisture.

The best way to stop condensation in a metal shed is to apply closed cell polyurethane spray foam. This acts like a giant radiator so the air inside the shed gets very warm. The metal roof heats up quickly in the sun.
